Just who do you think should decide whether the footnotes are needed are
not? Should we have a government commission that allows no history to be
published without documenting the sources?  If someone writes it,
someone publishes it, and someone buys it, then I guess the publisher
and the audience let the author off the hook.  You don't have to buy it
or read it.
