Fred,
I have followed this thread with interest, and admit to being perplexed by 
the suggestion that writing a narrative account lets a writer of history, 
whether that person be a novelist or historian by profession, off the hook 
for documenting his sources.

Why can narrative histories be written without citing sources?
Can anyone help explain this.  I amsure many of the GDG are familiar with 
foote's massive three volume work.
