Jeff,

Richard Rollins started the Federal artillery work in 1985. I actually
started compiling records as far back at 68, this after having spent countless hours
on the field and surrounding properties. It was could have been out years ago
save we decided to incorporate a general CSA body to the text. It just did
not right read right with so much Federal work and little if anything on the
ANV.

To truly understand what culminated at Gettysburg is to understand the men
who we refer to as the "artillerists." They were not all Union during the war.
Our PRELUDE TO GETTYSBURG: POLICIES, PRINCIPLES AND POLITICS is 100 pages of
text and notes alone. As hard as we tried we could not cut from it and make
the work read as we wanted.

EXAMPLE:

Fort Waschita, Indian Territory (what year I forget). There is casual
conversation after supper between some soon be famous figures. i.e., Lee, Hunt,
Berry, Bragg, I think J. Johnston, and a newly commissioned lieutenant named John
Buford. The conversation was on horse artillery and its funding, the pros and
cons and what to expect. Very easy to see what Lee thinks about artillery
in general which became obvious during the war. One can also see where Buford
was headed as he sided with Bragg and Hunt. This after supper talk is why Bragg
resigned his commission .... A most brilliant light artillerist.

Is at final. Prelude-July First this summer. July 2-3 next year. To much to
tell, cannot cut corners. Has to be two volumes to make affordable. It's a
tactical study; not the last word. What's really cool ... we have photos of all
but six Union battery commanders. Plenty section commanders and enlisted
personal too. Anyone ever see a photo of Lieutenant Davidson, one of the heroes of
the East RR Cut, of Stweart's 4th U.S Battery? Pretty neat looking fellow even
with his left leg.

Thanks for the interest.

Dave S.
