GDG- open the floodgates

Well, I see I pushed some buttons with my emails. Listen - I grew up in Lancaster County for 22 years and had to put up with Amish tourists all the time. However, were there modern conveniences in Lancaster County? Yes. Were people still able to gawk at the Amish(I wish those people could be left in peace)? Yes. I'm just wondering what the preservationists answer or ideal solution is. There has to be a happy medium to this answer. Bear in mind(myself not included) that everyone who moves to Gettysburg or lives in Gettysburg is not a Civil War buff. I would venture to say that 80 - 90% of my neighborhood do not step foot on the battlefield from week to week. I've heard comments from neighbors(not all young people either) like "You know, we live here, we should really take a battlefield tour sometime." Some people moved here because their jobs brought them here. Some people moved here because their family is here. Some people just thought it
is a nice town to raise their children. I'm not saying slap a Mcdonalds arch on the Pennsylvania monument, for God's sake, I'm just saying I feel sometimes that the preservationists don't take the big picture into account and it's their way or the highway. This issue will probably never be solved and each side sees things in their own way.
