Of course, the illegitimacy story, with an amazing variety of putative fathers, is as durable antique for many reason, primarily an effort to explain how someone as extraordinary as Lincoln could have come from such humble origins. There's an very interesting book out, "Did Lincoln Own Slaves-and other frequenty asked questions about Abraham Lincoln," by Gerald J. Prokopowicz. On the issue of Lincoln's legitimacy, the author points out that the idea that Nancy Hanks conceived her son out of wedlock at all doesn't jibe with the verifiable data. Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks were married on June 12, 1806. Abraham was their second child, born in 1809. His older sister was born in 1807.
Regards.
