The auto tour has gone through several stages of evolution through the
years, this being but the most recent.
After much deliberation by the Park staff, the decision was made to have one
auto tour with the new maps, which were printed for distribution at the new
museum (since the starting place was different, it was essential to have a
new edition of the map). There had often been confusion on the part of
visitors as to the third hour, and it deterred people from going to Culp's
Hill.
My own concern with the route has to do with increased congestion near the
campus on Lincoln Avenue and on Oak Ridge, Robinson Avenue.
If time is short, people can choose for themselves how much of the tour to
take.
With the more extensive museum and the work being accomplished downtown on
restoration and interpretation, it is expected that more visitors will make
Gettysburg an overnight or multiple day destination, rather than a simple
day trip or stop on their vacation.
