GDG- 71st Pennsylvania and PA Monument

John,

The best source of information on this subject is Don Ernsberger at 
ernscave at aol.com.  He has put together a logical analysis of the position 
and IIRC he does not believe that all eight companies were at the 
north-south wall.  Interestingly, Anthony McDermott of the 69th PA next to 
the 71st along the wall wrote that he saw a number of companies of the 71st 
PA positioned along the east-west wall (!) facing north, but says that they 
moved back to the knoll (beyond the present park road) when the bombardment 
began, since they would have been in deep do-do in that spot.
