GDG- New Museum introduction

Bob,

I believe they do it for the same reason that much of this country spent the first 80 or so years of its existence desperately trying for find some way to make slavery disappear as an issue without confronting the existence of slavery and whether it should continue: it's awkward, ugly, and Exhibit A in illustrating the concept of cognitive dissonance between our ideals and our reality. And both before and after the Civil War, people have been able to pretend for a while, even many decades, that they have succeeded. But slavery is like the awkward relative who families try to keep away from public gatherings. It may stay in the attic or the back room or away for a while, but, sooner or later, show up it will and at the most embarassing time.

Regards,

Margaret
