GDG- Re: Save The Electric Map

Hi All,

I viewed the website that has been put up as calling for the salvation of
the electric map.

I think it was over a year ago when the Park announced it was looking for
takers for the map. No one stepped forward. There were several inquiries as
to possibly moving it, but after that well it showed how much its worth.
Nostalgic is about it. For the sweet memories it brings. I used to take
first timers in there to give them an idea of the flow of the battle. And
the events of those three days in July.

But its time has past. Some one here noted kids are so much more aware and
into computerized graphics and other means.
The cost to move it, rewire and then install well must be in the millions!!

As Steve noted below, its time as past. Am I sad to see it go? Sure.
But with all things, well its done.

My apologies to those who feel its worth saving. I think the lack of those
who are willing to take it, and then the lack of those who have stepped
forward to take show its value.

Let it go.
With Respect,
JIM Lamason

Well then why not put it under Plexiglas and make it part of the floor or
build some kind of outdoor display case in front of the new VC just
preserve
it and DISPLAY it that's all. As a preservationist can you not see all of
the good this map has done through the years? I understand this seems maybe
a bit much but why put it away where nobody sees it.

Kevin,

As one who has a sentimentality towards the Map, I understand your
feelings.
I remember seeing it for the first time back in 1973 when I was just 10
years old. That said, it has served the people who have visited well in
the
many years, but I can just imagine the cost of dismantling the thing,
bringing
it over to the new VC, and then rewiring it. The VC is so over budget as
it
is, and because of that, us regular folks who make the trips to Gettysburg
are
gonna be the ones who will bear the extra cost.

As to comparing it to the Cyclorama, That's a moot point. The Cyclorama is

a national treasure, and the Map, while highly revered is not even close to

that level, IMHO.
