Well then why not put it  under Plexiglas and make it part of the floor or
build some kind of outdoor  display case in front of the new VC just preserve
it and DISPLAY it that's  all. As a preservationist can you not see all of
the good this map has done  through the years? I understand this seems maybe
a bit much but why put it  away where nobody sees it.

As one who has a sentimentality towards the Map, I understand your  feelings. 
 I remember seeing it for the first time back in 1973 when I was  just 10 
years old.  That said, it has served the people who have visited  well in the 
many years, but I can just imagine the cost of dismantling the  thing, bringing 
it over to the new VC, and then rewiring it.  The VC is so  over budget as it 
is, and because of that, us regular folks who make the trips  to Gettysburg are 
gonna be the ones who will bear the extra cost.
 
As to comparing it to the Cyclorama, That's a moot point.  The  Cyclorama is 
a national treasure, and the Map, while highly revered is not even  close to 
that level, IMHO.
