Actually, Rommel was on active duty in Europe from September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, starting WW II.

Sorry to take this further OT than it already is, but I believe the business
about Rommel visiting Gettysburg is a myth that originated in the NOVEL
"Rommel and the Rebel" which was VERY loosely based on the real life visit
of five German Officers (which did NOT include Rommel) to Brices' Crossroads
in 1937. In any event, as the US declared war on Germany in December of 1941
and Rommel committed suicide in October of 1944, he most certainly did not
visit Gettysburg in the 1940's if ever.
