Andy: That's who I thought it was when I read the book. He just seemed to Victor McLaclen in the Johns Ford and Wayne westerns. One of my favorite characters, and probably why I thought I recognized it.

What I have heard about Kilrain, is that it was a way for Shaara to put in his own thoughts and feelings, that Kilrain was in a sense, Shaara's morals being portrayed in the book, not that he was a hodgepodge of various soldiers, but the voice of the author. I am not 100% certain of this, so please don't quote me, it is just something I have heard throughout the years.

Thanks
Andy

I was reading somewhere Buster was a composite of several real soldiers at
Gettysburg he researched as he was getting together the material for the
book.

I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
"Come in," she said "I'll give you shelter from the storm."
