While Killer Angels is fiction, it is historic fiction and it therefore
isn't surprising that this happened.  The woman's confusion at his absence
is understandable (I can't remember if Shaara advised his readers in the
foreward about Kilrain.)  

The sad thing about this is not that the woman believed that Kilrain was
real, but in her anger failed to realize that the "person" she had grown to
care was really "people" and they _are_ on the monument.
