Stuart's decisions were well within the scope of his orders and authority,
and his handling of his forces during the ride itself, tactically
proficient. However, his mission was planned based on a set of "best case
scenarios", that left little or no margin for delay or error. Once forced
to divert from his optimum route, his options for recovering from the delay
and effecting a successful link-up with Ewell became very limited.
