John, with regard to your first question, the park service has just removed the trees on the western slope of the triangular field, and the enitre field is now clearly visible.
Regarding the spur, I believe that the college and park swapped some land in the vicinity, and I think the college cut away some of the slope of Oak Hill near the east railroad cut. I'm a little fuzzy on that, however, and some of our colleagues can probably provide more information on that matter.

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
Hello my name is John M. Ryan, I am new to the list but not new to having a lifetime interest in the Civil War. When I was 5 years old in 1938 my father introduced me to a neighbor about four houses down the block and explained to me that the gentleman was a Civil War veteran who was part of Mulligan's Irish Brigade. The respect my father showed for the vet made me take a special interest in him. When he was out on his porch I would go up and say hello to him, he would pat me on the head and tell me to say hello to my father. That fall I started kindergarden and sort of forgot about him. The following spring I would walk by his house and look for him but my father informed me that he had heard that the poor fellow had passed away. Almost 70 years later I still think of him now and then.
I have been to Gettysburg last Oct. and then again last April. I am planning to go again this Oct. These trips are something for me since I retired and moved to Spain 20 years ago. Each time I go I make a list of various aspects of the battle that I want to study. One of the things on my list is to find out if the triangular field near Devils Den is recognizable? Another item is that I just read Barbara Platt's history of the battlefield and my second question is what happened to the spur line that the college installed that caused such an uproar. The last two times I was there I didn't notice any spur when I crossed over the famous cut. Did I miss something? Thanks in advance for any help. I sure am enjoying this list. Thank you, John Ryan, Salamanca, Spain
