That was indeed a stone wall at the time of the battle.
Nonetheless, that's a wonderful view of Brown's Gate and the overgrown
"slashing" that shielded the front of the 59th NY when it held the line
on July 2 and 3. Thankfully now the Park has returned it to something
of the appearance it held in 1863. The 59th actually stood just beyond
the spot where their monument is, in the lines designated by the 7th
Michigan's monument. It was a very low stone wall augmented by some
nearby rails and earth thrown over it. Cpl. Jacob L. Bechtel of Company
B, 59th NY described it on July 2 when he wrote four days later: "We
[were] placed in the center & front, there we built a temp[orary] brest
[sic] work, but ere night came we found it of great advantage."
