Yessir! I am a firm believer in Napoleon's maxim "give me a lucky general
over a good one," but I have also worked very hard to get to where I am as a
flag historian. This is a dream job and I have held enough crummy ones in my
life to realize that.
The saddest part of this to me is that three people who had a lot of
influence on me as a flags historian over the years have all died far too soon
including the curator who's book I have been hired to complete. Richard Rollins,
who wrote the fine book on CS flags at Gettysburg (to which I contributed -
he also got me into the CWRT movement some 20 years ago); Howard Madaus, my
biggest flags mentor and a good friend; and Sheila Greene, TN State Museum
curator who was not only a consummate professional but a real hoot to be around
too.
I would give this all up to have them all back with us. I just hope that
this book will be worthy of them.
