I  would submit that those who landed on Iwo Jima or Normandy were facing
potentially as deadly a situation. The men of the Civil War cared deeply.

Ah, George.  You know you cannot get away with posing that premise without
elaborating.

What makes you think "the soldiers of both sides during the Civil War were
from a world so different from that of today that it is nearly impossible
for the average officer or enlisted man to comprehend what motivated them to
do what they did - and how they did it."

That's quite a statement that requires detailed explanation.
