"What makes a book outstanding is the fact that it is based extensively on
primary research ... also, be sure to use an editor ... You
need an independent view of what the reader will find interesting, and how
well the material is presented."
Tom makes two great points. Too many books rely too heavily on secondary
sources. When you get down to it, what's the point of just re-hashing
someone else's work? Unless I've had a specific recommendation about a
book, the first thing I do is look at the bibliography. The more primary
sources, the more likely I'll look further. No primary sources, or worse
yet, no bibliography, then it usually goes right back on the shelf.
As part of a collaborative effort with Eric W. & J.D., I also agree with
having someone else edit your work. While the three of us will comment on
and make suggestions re: each other's work, you end up being to close to the
work to see things that a fresh set of eyes will catch right away.
Good luck with your book. Let us know what it's about and when to expect
it.

Mike Nugent
