<<I'd really like to know what makes a book outstanding for you as
readers.>>
Hi JoAnn,
Congratulations on getting near publication with your book. What makes a
book outstanding is the fact that it is based extensively on primary
research. Relying on secondary sources is usually a mistake, since other
authors have their own biases and, at times, include erroneous material.
Some secondary source material is o.k., especially if you are including it
to make a point with a different perspective than the original author.
The bottom line is the book should be original, one of a kind. That is
what will make it outstanding. Also, be sure to use an editor. It is not
wise to rely on your own perception of what works and what does not. You
need an independent view of what the reader will find interesting, and how
well the material is presented.
What is the subject of your work? If you are going to self-publish, I know
someone who has done that successfully, and can put you in touch if you
would like to contact me privately.
Regards, Tom Ryan
