<<>From the top ten lists so far, it looks like the main focus is on the
three-day battle rather than the two-month long campaign. I happen to lean
toward the idea that a true understanding of the battle can only occur
within the larger framework of the entire campaign (June 3 to late
July-early August). In other words, to only study the battle turns out to
be an academic exercise, while to research the entire campaign provides a
broader perspective of the impact of the Battle of Gettysburg on the war as
a whole.
Hasten to add there is nothing wrong with simply enjoying the battle as an
academic exercise.
Any thoughts? >>
One book I have found vital to understanding the Gettysburg Campaign is
Edwin Fishel's "The Secret War for the Union", even though its scope is not
limited to the Gettysburg Campaign.
