I have two bookshelves full of books on the civil war. A total of 45 on

Hello,
Well I went and counted and for a committed Western Theater guy I have
41 GB
books (not including the OR which I have a complete set as well as the
naval
ORs which I did get for free along with my set of Confederate Veteran).
By contrast I counted those for the Atlanta Campaign, which is my
favorite
campaign of the war, and came up with 77, and that's not counting the OR
volumes nor any March to the Sea books.
My collection on all aspects of the war in Georgia reaches well over 200
books - maybe higher - including regimentals, books on cities of GA,
Chickamauga, etc.

Walter, would your wife consider 33 feet of book shelves in the
bathroom?
Tom,
Wow, a great gift! I agree that using the paper copies is so MUCH
better
than online or a CD-ROM. Sigh, now if I could only convince my wife
that
the bathroom remodeling can wait. :^)

Ghost conference scares up Lady Farm donation
Gettysburg, Sept. 2 -- It was no apparition when the organizers of the
first annual Ghost World Conference pledged to donate proceeds from
raffles to the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association for the
restoration of the farmhouse of the Daniel Lady Farm.
In all 1,210 "dead presidents" were presented to GBPA board
member-emeritus Mark Nesbitt himself the author of the Ghost of
Gettysburg series.
More than 300 paranormal enthusiasts from the U.S. and Canada attended
the late July conference in Gettysburg that includes lectures, workshops
and discussions.
"This was as especially pleasant surprise because the donation off came
from 'out of the blue," said GBPA President Kathi Schue. "Jeff Belanger
of Ghost World, LLC, called and told me that in organizing the
conference, they had looked into worthy historic causes in Gettysburg
where their donation could make a big difference and that a number of
people had told him about the Lady Farm."
"You can't study ghosts without also exploring history," said Vince
Wilson, one of the founding partners of Ghost World, LLC, "and if we can
help the GBPA continue their great work in some small way, that alone
makes our weekend conference a big success."
One aspect of the Lady farmhouse that the conference organizers found
especially intriguing is the plethora of bloodstains on the floors of
some rooms where wounded an dying Confederates were treated.
The Ghost World donation was a one-time benefit for the GBPA. Next
year's Ghost World Conference will be held in Salem, Massachusetts and
the raffle will benefit a historic preservation cause there.
GBPA is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in
1959 as the first public/private partnership at Gettysburg. The GBPA has
played a continuous role in purchasing endangered battlefield land such
as the Meals Farm, Timbers Farm, Wolf Farm, Taney Farm, the Colgrove
tract, the Willoughby Run tract, the East Cavalry Field tract, and other
parcels to save them from have been saved from development and
commercialism. The GBPA has a web site at www.gbpa.org.

There might be a few strays about that I missed, but I came up with 68
on
Getttysburg (not counting my thankfully complete set of Gettysburg
Magazine).
When it comes to the CW, my primary focus is not on G'burg, so most of
my CW
books are about other AOP campaigns or tactics.

OK, Tom, you stirred the interest. Let me suggest a variant or

97). Which one do you keep, and why?

I are a colej perfessor and teach one course on the Civil War, so I am
ashamed to admit I only have about 30 Gettysburg books. However, in my
defense, thanks to this list I have collected some of the top picks,
although I'm learning about some more from these suggestions of the top
ten.

Eric Wittenberg turned me on to the OR's on cd a few years ago and I
have
never looked back. I've been working on the issue of John Reynolds
having
two signal officers assigned to him. If it were not for the cd edition I
would still be scouring the paper versions.
Books are a wonderful thing, but I would rather have everything I can
find
on disc. It's much faster to find items in a rush.
BTW, we just returned from a long weekend in Gettysburg. We did a few
things
we have not had the time to do in the past (every time I go out without
the
uniform, I become more inspired to leave the uniform at home). The
Shriver
house for instance. What a great tour! I imagine most of you have had
the
chance to do the tour, but if not, add it to your list.
Sharon and I took a self guided tour of the farms of Gettysburg. It was
an
awesome learning experience from the civilian point of view. I had not
known
that so many reimbursement claims went unpaid by the Federal Government.
The ghost tours were of course in full swing. It seems like ghosts are
what
bring the tourists to Gettysburg these days.

Bruce,
Interesting. Why is that? It sounds like you are saying the CD search
feature is more capable of locating items (names, places, etc.) in the
OR
than are contained in the OR General Index. Is that what you have found
to
be the case?
Could you elaborate on what was going on in Brent Nosworthy's situation,
and
how the CD search capability aided him in his work?

Dave, no question it would be OR, vol. 27 (3 books). It I have to
choose
among those three, it would be Volume 3 (Union and Confederate

It is difficult to pin down isn't it. Gettysburg books seem to keep
popping
up in different places. When I need them I know where they are, but
counting them is a whole other matter.

I was surprised when I counted, but 202 on GB. Not including GB Mag and
other assorted pamphlets.
I have a copy of the Boston Cyclorama booklet from the 1880's, no actual
date on it. Didn't count that as a Gettysburg book.
And so much more to read!

Here's a tip on a possible source of free or inexpensive CW books
(Gettysburg and otherwise). About a year ago at our local library, I
noticed that the CW book shelves had been cleaned out by half or more.
What
happened was the librarians had weeded out books that were not
circulating.
By this time, these books had already disappeared into the periodic book
sale at the library.
I requested the librarian to notify me the next time they weeded the CW
shelf, so that I could purchase the excess items (usually they sell for
about $1 at the book sale). As a result I have since received four or
five
discarded CW books from the library, and am looking forward to getting
more.
Check with your local library. It may be a good source.

>From the top ten lists so far, it looks like the main focus is on the
three-day battle rather than the two-month long campaign. I happen to
lean
toward the idea that a true understanding of the battle can only occur
within the larger framework of the entire campaign (June 3 to late
July-early August). In other words, to only study the battle turns out
to
be an academic exercise, while to research the entire campaign provides
a
broader perspective of the impact of the Battle of Gettysburg on the war
as
a whole.
Hasten to add there is nothing wrong with simply enjoying the battle as
an
academic exercise.
Any thoughts?

Hi Tom -
The original posted question referred specifically to the battle: "What
would be considered the top ten books on the battle that someone should
have in their library?" So that's why I think responses on the whole
have been that way.
I would say that opening it up to include the whole campaign would
certainly make the task a lot harder...
It's sort of like the question a couple of years ago that was never
really answered: "What are the top 10 articles in The Gettysburg
Magazine?" How the heck could one do /that/?!?

Hello,
An excellent point. I would also add that to study the campaign with
out
studying the social issues that surround the battle and were left in the
wake of the battle make it an academic exercise well.
How about a count of the number of books that we all own that deal
solely
with the soci0-cultural aspect of the battle? I am away from my
collection, but I would suspect I have less than a dozen on that
(probably
30 or 40 general works). Certainly the books on the citizens of
Gettysburg, or the hospitals at Gettysburg, or analyzing Lincoln at
Gettysburg would fit into that category. Tom Desjarden's book
analyzing
the effect of Gettysburg in American Memory would fit the bill as well.
Take Care
Dennis
