Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
"A question What would be considered the top ten books on the battle that
someone should have in their library?"
That is an excellent question. I think the answer is in the eye of the
beholder. It would be different books for different people.
My top ten can't do without would be (more or less in priority order):
The three volume OR on Gettysburg
Coddington's "The Gettysburg Campaign":
Phanz's "First and Second Day at Gettysburg, and Culp's Hill and Cemetery
Hill" (3 books)
Longacre's "The Cavalry at Gettysburg"
Busey and Martin's "The Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg"
Meade's "Life and Letters of General George Gordon Meade" Volume II
Brown's "Retreat From Gettysburg"
Hyde's "The Union Generals Speak: The Meade Hearings on the Battle of
Gettysburg"
Nye's "Here Come the Rebels!"
Gottfried's "The Roads to Gettysburg: Lee's Invasion of the North, 1863""
That's more than 10, but these get the most use.
Tom
