I have about 60 or so, and of those, I think the top 10 on my shelf are
(not necessarily in order):
1. Coddington's "The Gettysburg Campaign"
2. The ORs (cheating a little bit - this includes 3 volumes, but they
were shrink-wrapped together when I got them...)
3. Gottfried's "The Maps of Gettysburg"
4. Frassanito's "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time"
5. Martin's "Gettysburg: July 1"
6. Pfanz's "Gettysburg: The Second Day"
7. Pfanz's "Gettysburg: Culp's Hill & Cemetery Hill"
8. Stewart's "Pickett's Charge"
9. Longacre's "The Cavalry at Gettysburg"
10. <left open for Shultz & Rollins "Artillery at Gettysburg"> :-)
I suppose most would believe that Busey & Martin's "Regimental Strengths
and Losses at Gettysburg" (I have the fourth edition) should be up there
as well. But that would mean Frassanito's would have to go, and I
couldn't make myself do that (a purist would probably argue that
Frassanito's isn't really that "battle related", but (a) I'm not that
pure, and (b) it's my list damn it! :- )).
I picked these not necessarily as being "my most favorite" (although
most certainly are), but more in the line with trying to cover as many
aspects of the /battle/ as possible. A general overview (Sears, Trudeau
or Tucker, for example) could have fit in, and certainly I very much
respect some of the micro-histories - including Wittenberg's text on
Brinkerhoff's Ridge, or his work with Petruzzi on Stuart's ride, or
Adelman & Smith's work on the Devil's Den, or Jorgenson's on the
Wheatfield, or Christ's book on the Bliss farm, or ... <sigh> So many
*great* books, mostly recommended by people on this list...
Respectfully submitted,
Alan
PS. I do know that Imhoff's work on Day 2 is /very/ highly respected,
and I'd love to have one on my shelf - so if anyone is out there trying
to dump a copy for, oh say, under the couple of thousand being asked out
there... :-)
