Hi Ron,
Civil War weapons had a tendency when fired to recoil pulling the barrel of
the weapon up... So the officers would remind the men to air low. When the
weapons fired the guns would recoil up, as the bullet left the barrel. The
bullet would leave it if they aimed low, about waist high on a man of that
period.
