<< On May 27, 1863, General Hooker's intelligence staff chief, Col. George
Sharpe, wrote a position report on Lee's army that was sitting across the
Rappahannock River from the Union army a few days prior to the beginning of
the Gettysburg Campaign.
Does anyone know any sources that would verify the accuracy of this report?
In other words sources that discuss the position of the Army of Northern
Virginia units on or around this date. Also, is there a sketch or map
available that shows the location of these units? >>
No I don't, or, know of any specific places to look. Knowing how the BMI
worked, though, I'd imagine the imformation was compiled from a variety of
sources.
One way to back into an analysis of how accurate the information was might
be to start with the next places the various confederate units are known to
have marched to, from the reported locations, and try to work back to where
they'd have started from.
