standardized in any way, or if it had? regional differences?
I know the recipe was reasonably standard but I often wondered if it could 
have been tweaked to someone's advantage somehow or other.  >>

There certainly could be, and probably were, some manufacturing differences, 
but by the CW black powder was a relatively mature product and on the whole 
produced to accepted specifications as to both composition and grain size.
