In addition, during and after the Overland Campaign, I think Warren was showing pretty clear signs of what we'd call PTSD now or what would have been called combat fatigue in WW II or shell shock in WW I. I think he was far too sensitive for his own good. When Chamberlain writes about it in "Passing of the Armies" it seems clear that he, like others in the Fifth Corps, saw Warren's flaws as a corps commander but also saw him as an honorable man who had given dedicated service to his country and who actually did a decent job at Five Forks with all of the hurdles place in his way. That he needed to be replaced, I think they, for the most part, accepted, but they could not and did not accept that he deserved to be removed for Five Forks, especially in the brutal and humiliating way in which Sheridan did it and they testified to that effect at the Court of Inquiry after the war.
