does a
good job of explaining this aspect of Sheridan and how he ruined three
military careers

The other two military careers discussed in this regard (besides that of
Warren) were those of William Averell and George Crook. Certainly, Averell's
career was basically wrecked when Sheridan relieved him of command of his
division of cavalry (and failed to make him commander of the new Cavalry Corps),
but describing Crook's career as "wrecked" by being denied credit for what he
did in the 64 Shenandoah Valley campaign is surely too strong. After all,
Crook continued on in the Army after the Civil War, won promotion to Brigadier
General of Regulars, leaping directly to that rank from that of
lieutenant-colonel (a unique accomplishment, I believe, in the post-War Army) and won a
reputation as the best Indian fighter in the Army. As Eric himself writes: "In
the end, Sheridan's greed and zeal for self-advancement at all costs did not
destroy his old friend's [Crook's] career. It only destroyed an old
friendship.
