I know Warren said he did so, but if not debunked, there has at least been 
some doubt raised about the cannon shot in recent years.  For one thing, 
there was no artillery there on the hill with him.  He'd have had to send 
somebody out to Smith's battery to get him to fire a shot.  Possible, but 
how necessary.  If the signal men could see the enemy troops, why couldn't 
Warren.  The skirmish lines out in that direction were already exchanging 
fire.  (Union skirmish lines were well out, and included elements of the 
USSS.)  This was by no mean a surprise attack.
