Hi Jim -
I've heard that stated often about the areas where there were trees -
that the domesticated animals tended to keep the underbrush &c clear.
And, I believe, at least some of the area you are discussing was used
for grazing too. But I do wonder about those rocks - it is a very rocky
area, I don't know how well animals could graze there, and what the
likelihood for injuries for our 4-footed friends would have been?
(And I do like Jack Lawrence's reference to Omaha Beach, seem quite
appropriate.)
