As loathe as I am to mention reenacting here since it is general regarded
with sneers and jeers, I will say that I once saw an artillery piece
fired, swabbed, loaded (1 lb of powder / no shell) and then when the
rammer was inserted, the gun went off, taking the rammer =with two arms
attached to it= down range. The rammer, a boy of 16 year old and son of
the battery commander, lived, although horrible handicapped and disfigured
from the flash.
I don't recollect seeing reenacting being sneered and jeered at on this
site, but on the subject of reenacting artillery accidents, about 15 years ago I
attended an event where two or three cannons were being fired (with blanks).
I noted that one of the reenactors (he was ramming home the charges) had an
artificial arm. I don't know if he had lost his own arm in a cannon
accident, but it seemed likely.
