I strongly doubt that simply removing the thumb from the venthole could be  
relied upon to fire the gun, as this story requires.  Sometimes, in the  heat 
of battle sponging the barrel might have been skipped in order to speed  
reloading, but that would substantially increase the chance of an accidental  
discharge.
