We live here in town now, too. We make sure that we are out of town when
the bikes are in town.

Hello,
Having lived in Gettysburg for a number of years, I experienced the
increase of bikers and the bike rallies. I know bikers love their bikes, the
noise and all associated with them.
However, I will never forget the noise, and the attitudes of many of the
bikers. In short, I left town when I knew they were coming.
I don't think they add anything to the community. Yes, I know they raise
money for the battlefield, and so believe they also have the right to make
their noise and display their attitude.
There was a time I thought bikes were cool. Not any more.

The one and only thing that bothers me about motorcycles in Gettysburg is
the loudness of them on the battlefield. There are probably still the
remains of hundreds of young Americans lying beneath the soil, all over the
battlefield. Not all bodies were found when the re-internments were done. It
was just a few years ago that remains of a young man were found at the
railroad cut.

Many motorcycles are loud. Many motorcyclists like them because they are
loud. But there are certain places and times where loudness does not belong.
Would you shout in the middle of a funeral? Would you drive through a
cemetery with your car windows down and your radio playing at max volume?
The entire battlefield is a cemetery. Cycles on Route 15 are fine. But the
roads on the battlefield are not there for vehicle traffic - they are there
to enable you to visit this unique and somber place. The battlefield can be
visited on foot, or on the bus.

I no longer give tours during Harley Weekend, for the above reasons. I also
recommend people to avoid that weekend for visits to the battlefield.

John Baniszewski, LBG

Keith,

It is a dream come true. Been here one year.
Can't wait for everyone to see the tree clearing
west of the Triangular Field. Stunning is too
mild a word.

Peggy

Since I started this before I left the house this morning, it is interesting

to read everyone's comments. The post from John B. (LBG) comes very close
to my sentiments. Remenber please that the fields that surround this town
that are owned by the NPS is not the only "battlefield". As a Licensed Town
Guide I help people understand how the military action changed this place,
and yes that has been since "day 5". The disrespect of some unfortunately
taint the whole. I also agree that events like yesterdays' are at least
benfitting a worthwhile cause, but when certain events literally shut down a

community, that's wrong. We no longer conduct Town Tours during certain
events, and I have worked in some retail & museum environments that close as

well. The residents of Gettysburg do not welcome these events at all, they
are simply forced on us. We simply learn how to cope with a very unpleasant
experience.

I will add my amens to all of your thoughts.

I have been in town for only one of these days. As a result, I now stay away
from it for that very reason.

I know it makes the town needed funds to operate but other then that?
I wish didn't have to happen!

Keith,

<either through circumstance or misadventure, to follow? Did he even know if
there was such a plan?>>

There is nothing in the messages from Lee or Longstreet about a timetable
for Stuart's movements. Unfortnately none of Stuart's messages to Lee are
available, so there is no way to know whether he was working on a timetable.

<but didn't insist. This sounds to me very much like his "suggestion" that
Ewell "take that hill" on day one.>>

On June 23, Lee followed up his June 22 message to Stuart and told him that
"should [Hooker's army] not appear to be moving northward, I think you had
better withdraw this side of the mountain to-morrow night, cross at
Shepherdstown next day, and move over to Fredericktown. You will, however,
be able to judge whether you can pass around their army without
hinderance...."

Those are pretty vague orders. But my reading of the situation is, once
Stuart realized that the Union army was moving northward (in other words the
opposite of "not...moving northward"), he felt that he had the authority to
"pass around their army." If this reading of Lee's orders is correct, then
Stuart was following orders when he detoured around the rear of the Union
army.
