There are earthworks left from Ft. Pocahontas at Jamestown. The
archaeologists there doing digs made disparaging remarks (to someone
watching their dig with me 3 feet away) about the "civil war buffs" upset
that they were digging into some of them to get to colonial artifacts.
Here's a link to the Ft. Monroe museum with hours listed:
http://www.monroe.army.mil/Monroe/sites/installation/museum/Casemate_Museum.aspx
To get on post the directions are here:
http://www.monroe.army.mil/Monroe/sites/about/directions.aspx
Here's the security info for getting on:
If you have a DoD decal, enter Ft. Monroe onto *Ingalls Rd* *(It's the road
on your left at the "Y" intersection. Keep the Military Police Guard House
to your right)*. If you don't have a DoD decal, bear to your right at the
gate and enter via McNair Dr. After providing all requested identification,
you will be given a "Day Pass" allowing visitation throughout Ft. Monroe for
the day.
*NOTE:* Maximum speed limit on Ft. Monroe is *25 mph*.
