When reading the OR for Gettysburg, specifically the Union order of battle..
General Reynolds is not listed.....Curious?
Generals listed on pg.155 Chapter XXXIX:
Meade
Patrick
Hunt
Benham
Doubleday
Newton
Meredith
Wadsworth
Cutler
Did the writers of the OR- omit him, or just a mistake way after the battle?
He certainly would be upset- with all the others getting print!
Tim
Any educated guesses-Who did compile the OR?

Tim,
Reynolds is mentioned in a footnote to the The First Army Corps on page 155
(Vol. 27, Part 1) as follows: "Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, of this corps,
was killed July 1, while in command of the left wing of the army; General
Doubleday commanded the corps July 1, and General Newton, who was assigned
to that command on the 1st, superseded him July 2."
The War Department compiled the OR under the supervision of Lt. Col. Robert
N. Scott and other officers over a period of some 40 years from the early
1880's to the early 1920's.

He's also listed under the 1st Corps in the casualty returns (page 173),
with a reference back to this same footnote. In addition, on page 190, in
the list of officers killed, under U.S. Volunteers, since he was not by
virtue of his rank and position a member of any specific state formation.
Note that the Order of Battle really only addresses the matter of Wings by
way of mention in footnotes pertaining to Reynolds and Slocum, which shows
how the Wings, when used, were ad hoc structures and not formal OOB
formations as were Corps, divisions, etc.

And if you don't have a subscription to Gettysburg Magazine, that makes
another gift that keeps on giving (every 6 months).

Preferably that will change to every three months sometime in the future.

I'm here. The idea of going quarterly is still up in
the air. In the responses from the reader's survey
that was in subscribers' copies of issue 37, the vast
majority of respondents said keep it at twice a year.

Hi Andy,
Majority rules I guess. Still the idea of receiving GM four times a year
rather than two seems like an advantage. Not only the pleasure of receiving
it more often, but a quarterly that would be about half size would be less
formidable to read all the way through. As it stands now, I usually pick
out favorites, and often do not get to the remainder. To a certain extent
it is a logistics issue -- competition for available hours . Having less to
deal with each quarter would expedite the reading I suspect.
Certainly there are arguments for the other viewpoint as well.

Hello everybody,
This email is intended to introduce myself to the Gettysburg Disscussion
Group. I am 31 years old and I have been a Civil War Buff since 1985.
I have visited Gettysburg twice, once in 1986 and a second time in
1989. Both visits increased my interest in the battle and since 1985 my
passion for the Civil War as only grown.
Before I go into the things that interest me about Gettysburg I should
introduce my overall Civil War interests. These are in order of
importance and a few of them might be broad topics and/or releated to
other topics that I like.
1. The lives of Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee
2. The Confederate High Command in the Eastern and Western theatre. This
includes the study of Brig. Generals.
3. The murder of President Lincoln
4. The 4th Alabama Regiment
5. The 8th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment
As for Gettysburg my interests are the following
1. Little Round Top and the struggle for that ground.
2. Reading the battle reports and accounts of the participants
3. The dedication and study of Gettysburg monuments and memorials.
4. Lee and Meade's decisions during and after the battle.
These are just a few of my interests. I hope to get some discussion
going.
Mike

Hi Mike and welcome aboard. You have come to the right place for discussion
of the subjects you listed. Your interests certainly come across as being
bipartisan, which is healthy from a learning perspective.
Since you listed the life of Robert E. Lee, I have to ask you whether you
have read Elizabeth Brown Pryor's new book "Reading the Man: A Portrait of
Robert E. Lee Through His Private Letters"? I am two-thirds of the way
through it, and find it to be the best depiction of Lee's personality
available today.
Another book I am curious whether you, or anyone else on the board, have
read called "Robert E. Lee's Civil War" by Bevin Alexander, and, if so, what
did you think of it. This book basically argues against Lee's combat
strategy, and places the blame for the loss of the war at his doorstep.
Again, welcome aboard, and look forward to your postings.
Regards, Tom Ryan

Tom:
I thought the war was lost in the West ;-)
If that was the case, how much influence could Lee have had on that, since he really didn't control much outside VA? Granted, he did have influence, but I still think he was overruled a lot as well (as Longstreet was taken from him twice and sent West).
Thanks
Andy
