Tom:

An interesting question would be: of those original 6,000 slaves, how many of them returned. Not how many were captured during teh invasion, but I would be curious to know how many of those 6,000 slaves escaped during the invasion and retreat. I would think it would have been a good chance during the retreat.

Thanks
Andy

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:

It has been reported that the ANV carried 6,000 slaves into the North with
them during the Gettysburg Campaign. That raises an interesting question
about how many blacks (probably mostly contrabands but also some free
blacks) the AoP had with them performing various jobs at Gettysburg.

Anybody have stats on that?

Tom

P.S. Best guess is that most of the 6,000 with the ANV were officers'
personal servants. A good number of the others were probably cooks,
teamsters, and laborers.
