Bob,

If you do not already have it, be sure to put Bradley Gottfried's "Maps of
Gettysburg" on the list. You can read my recent review of the book on the
Washington Times website www.washtimes.com. Click on Sections and then
Civil War in the drop down menu. It came out Saturday a week ago.

Another book just picked up but not yet read is "Maryland Voices of the
Civil War" edited by Charles W. Mitchell. According to the index, in
includes several Gettysburg references. Looking forward to reading it.

I'm currently reviewing a forthcoming book (January) called "This Republic
of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War." This is a deeply
researched and scholarly study of CW deaths from a variety of personal and
social perspectives. It is very readable despite the rather depressing
title. The author is Drew Gilpin Faust the current president of Harvard U.
She has a number of previous CW publications focusing primarily on the South
in general, Southern women, and slavery.

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:

I was wondering if anyone has any book recommendations for the holiday gift
list. Personally I have most of the GB standards (Pfanz, Coddington, Sears,
Wert, KM Brown, Eric Wittenburg, etc.). What do you think?
