I was on a tour a few weeks ago, and Dr. Mark Snell (host of the Ed Bearss Day 3 and Retreat tour for Civil War Tours) showed it to us. I believe it was discovered fairly recently. Perhaps the group that maintains the area around the monument may have discovered the site. Dr. Snell also said that one can often see bone fragments in that particular vicinity.
We were also told to sort of keep this discovery somewhat quiet. Don't want people digging around there. Let 'em rest in peace.

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:

I was told on Culps Hill behind the 2nd (1st) Maryland monument there was a
burial pit about ten yards in the woods. I checked it out and indeed there was
an indent with a small Confederate flag in it. Does anyone know anything
about this. A. P. Martin
