Yesterday after seeing the message by Josh Bucchioni I more or less read all the article by Mr. Groves and was moved by his convincing rationale that Gardener's photo is authentic in that the body was not moved there for photographic purposes. To me the two most famous photographs of the Gettysburg battle are the Devil's Den Sharpshooter and the Three Confederate Prisoners. From what I can gather is that the sharpshooter photo was decided to be a fake based on William Frassanito's study of the six extant photos of the area in his book, "Gettysburg, A Journey in Time". I am not sure of this point and I know some in this group will have more knowledge to clear this up if it is not so. If the so called fake is based on Frassanito's study did he ever make any reply to the work done by Mr. Groves? It also seems that the NPS isn't studying this issue with any regard in that if there is any doubt then the fake postulate should be rivised. I have been to Gettysburg four times now and No. 1 on my list next time is to spend some time studying the home of the sharpshooter. I want to thank Mr. Bucchioni for pointing out the Groves article which I found very interesting. If I had to vote I would say the Gardner photo is authentic. The more a person studies the Gettysburg battle the more unknown items keep popping up. This is a great list.
