Beyond the names and the other regiments, rests the fact that even if the
20th Maine had given way, just how much damage could somewhat over half of a
badly shot up, exhausted brigade, without artillery support or any chance of
reinforcement, could had done even if it had momentarily held LTR's summit
as the sun was fast setting over the South Mountain ramparts?
While the stand of Chamberlain and the 20th Maine was as gallants as was
the assaults by its Alabama opponents, there is good argument as to how
decisive the fight really was in the overall scope of the battle, the
campaign and, most certainly, the war.
And Kennedy's contention that had the 20th Maine been routed that two
nations between Canada and the Rio Grande would some how magically
materialize on the afternoon of July 2 is claptrap and utter historical
rubbish. It would seem Mr. Kennedy has seen "The Movie" more times than he
has bothered to read any thoroughly researched history of the battle let
alone one focusing on the July 2 LRT fight.
Heck, I wonder if he even bother to read Pullen?
   With regards,
         Chet
