In an introduction to the 2001 edition of his "Custer in  Photographs", D. 
Mark Katz stated: "[George Armstrong] Custer today remains the  most 
photographed man of the nineteenth century with 162 identifiable  photographs spanning 
the last twenty years of his life [the first dates from  1857, the last from 
1876]."  (And I know of five other Custer photos  identified since then.)
