I have numerous accounts from Charles Wainwright in which he mentions his
"man" or "servant." No name, mostly just my "man,"
He makes no bones about paying his "man" as little if anything even when he
had money. His "man" served throughout the war years and was at Gettysburg
tending to the colonels every needs. He was not a soldier that I know.
Employee? Slave? Servant?
Wainwright was old money from near Hyde Park N.Y. Where there slaves in that
part of the country back then?I Know there were lots of prejudices and such,
but slaves in New York? Have not heard that before, not in 1860s anyway.
Where there indentured servants back then, such as Irish immigrants? Where
the so poor so poor one would work for near nothing and face possible death
whilst serving someone of wealth who did not call them by either first or sir
name? I have found nothing suggesting Wainwright's "man' was a slave or even of
color. The wording it's self when read sounds as if I were reading E. P.
Alexander memoirs and not Wainwright's.
Very strange and somewhat disturbing. His "man" slept with his horses.
Any information would be appreciated. A name would be a good start.
Regards,
Dave S.
