The Camp Curtin Historical Society
proudly presents
Dr. Michael Barton
speaking on the
Journals of Charles Rawn
2:00PM, Sunday, November 11, 2007
at the Camp Curtin Memorial-Mitchell United Methodist Church
2221 North Sixth Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Michael Barton and his American Studies students at Penn State Harrisburg have been transcribing the daily journals kept from 1830-1865 by Charles Rawn. A Harrisburg attorney and anti-slavery activist, Rawnâs journals detail his activities defending runaway slaves and his service as a 60-year old soldier in a militia unit. Come and learn about one local citizenâs role in helping the Underground Railroad and opposing the Fugitive Slave Act.
This presentation combines Dr. Bartonâs three main areas of scholarship, the history of Harrisburg, the experiences of Civil War soldiers, and the characteristics of Americans.
Prof. Barton received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at Penn State for over thirty years, publishing numerous books and articles. The Patriot-News has named him "Top Harrisburg History Writer," and the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations has given him its Award of Merit for "Contributions to Public History."
Join us for this local history presentation and the 17th anniversary of the
founding of the Camp Curtin Historical Society
