Nonetheless, I personally do  find the thought that such weaponry was 
used very  disturbing

I always find it incredible when people start classifying one type of  person 
killing weapon worse than another. Surely the idea of warfare is to kill  as 
many of the enemy as possible in as short a time as possible to get the whole  
thing over and done with as fast as possible? In this instance if exploding  
bullets or poisoned bullets were available I would not hesitate in authorising 
 their use if I were a Regimental commander. Same thing applies today with 
the  use of landmines and cluster munitions, if they serve to preserve the lives 
of  my men or shorten the lives of the enemy you bet I'd use them, even 
better if  they did both.
