One factor that has to be taken in account in any report or letter regarding the battle is the length of time that elapsed between the battle and the date on which the document was written. I remember seeing a quote from the great WW II correspondent Ernie Pyle that he made a point of writing before he went to sleep each day because, if he waited, he found his memory was subtly even unconsciously influenced by what he subsequently heard, including the accounts of others.
