Dave,

It's clear from the accounts of Gettysburg residents that the primary reason that only one civilian was killed by military fire during the battle probably was the prevalence of substantial basements in Gettysburg homes (plus a certain amound of sheer luck) where residents could take shelter during the day.  After the first day, there is so much focus on the big attacks outside of the borough limits that it tends to be overlooked how much lead and iron were still being exchanged between the Union forces on and around Cemetery Hill and Confederate forces in the occuppied town.
