Just as the Williams' letter I initially referenced provided the answer to 
the question of who ordered Williams' withdrawal from the vicinity of 
Benner's Hill, another of Williams' letters answers this particular 
question.

"This hill lies nearly east, I judge, of Gettysburg, distant about a mile. 
It was a position for rebel artillery on the subsequent days...."
