Jim,
It pretty much boils down to money. Someone and/or some organization has to
purchase land or, at the very least, an easement running with title to the
property, in order to protect it. The NPS cannot acquire land outside of
park boundaries. Zoning can help, but zoning laws can be changed, and this
is still an area that is not terribly comfortable with zoning. Where the
land is still owned by the heirs of the original owners, if the heirs are
interested in historic preservation that can help keep the price down, but
the fact is that, when an estate's principal asset is decidely non-liquid
but taxes and other expenses still must be paid, owners often are not in a
financial position to turn away would-be commercial buyers indefinitely.
Regards,
Margaret

Hi Jim -
But if it were really a 50 mile radius, we're talking 50 x 50 x
3.141592... = 7,854 square miles (which is a little over 5 *million*
acres - I think its about 640 acres to the square mile).
I don't know what land is going for around the 'burg, but even
conservative estimates would put the worth at (maybe?) a few hundred
billion dollars...

Alan,
Look I am a realist.. You cant save ALL of it. No way. Within a 50 mile
radius that would include Harrisburg, Emmitsburg, Maybe Fredrick,
Chambersburg, Carlisle, Hanover. There is no way...
That I understand.. I am thinking out loud here. And I realize that a lot of
this is beyond reasonable. But there has to be a way to tell the story. Well
to quote Paul Harvey "The rest of the story"..
One thought on the side. Does any know how this is being if at all,
addressed in the new VC?

Margaret,
I understand that. There has to be a way to help.. Its takes creative
thinking...
I wonder if we could setup well a trust fund. If we could gather donations
just for this purpose. That when land comes available, the funds are there
to snatch it up.
Hmmmm.. I know CWPT has been doing a lot of this, but they can only go so
far.
