 Esteemed Members,

It saddens me that anyone has the audacity to want to put a water park there.? Its just not right.
I realize that its a 'touristy' area, but geez. This is hallowed ground, not some average area.? Good Grief.

I hate developers to begin with. If I EVER win powerball, I am going to do whatever I can with those funds to help shore up the battlefield and keep it safe from those horrible developers.? (and people say that lawyers are bad. I would rather lunch with a lawyer than a developer any day). (don't even make me start on mcmansions!? that is another rant for another day!)

In the meantime, I wonder if there is anything that we can do about this water park idea.?

In case anyone has any ideas, it might be easier to email me in this list and also privately at
willowreed at mindspring.com (Just in case my digest email box bounces. )

I am not sure what can be done outside of writing letters and that sort of thing, but maybe someone out there has some creative ideas.
I can have someone create some graphics for something if need be. He needs work for his portfolio, so there would be most likely no cost (or very little). ?? Just let me know.?

?I haven't been reading the list in a while because of the (horrible) day job (which I quit)? but right now I have some time so I choose to spend it with you esteemed members. I am going to school to become a paralegal and hopefully get my 4 year degree in political science (and a minor in history, of course!) as well.

Suzy
(still a/k/a wils)
(still in need of coffee).

Jim,

Sadly, there is no place to respond to the article. There is a link to chat
about it. The four posts only deal with how much they all loved going to
Fantasyland. A link for that is:
http://www.emmitsburg.net/archive_list/articles/history/gb/business/fantasyl
and.htm. It closed in 1980. It does not bode well for a negative response
to the proposed park.

Go figure.

One can only hope that this announcement was made to gage the public's
response to a water/theme park and if the response is not favorable, it will
just go away?

Unfortunately: I think as long as the dollar makes the world go around and

think it will change anytime soon.

A similar article appeared in the Hanover Evening Sun on Wednesday:
http://www.eveningsun.com//ci_7329868?IADID=Search-www.eveningsun.com-www.eveningsun.com

Apparently the township does not have a zoning ordinance that will address the
issue, although who would have conceived of such an issue when the zoning
ordinances were written? A concert hall is also planned for the site, and the
article also contains a distressing remark by some ignoramus about not wanting
"people from the inner city" in their township. It's pretty hard to ignore the
racial overtones in such a statement. The same person is quoted as expressing
the fear that residents will "become nauseous from the noise" coming from the
concert hall. He's right; I am becoming nauseous, and the place isn't even
approved yet.

Jim:

Actually: I am about 25 miles from Gettysburg. I am assuming you are using
IP-Geomapping to find that ;-) They probably have my IP registered around
there, but my actual location is much closer (If you want the technicalities of
all this, feel free to email me privately).

I am really close to Gettysburg :-)

I get there fairly often, except during late June - late July, as there are just
too many people for my taste. When I can have the park to myself, I tend to
avoid the park during tourist season. Early spring and late autumn, no one is
around in Gettysburg. It is awesome :-) Of course, nothing is more beautiful
than a fresh snowfall in Gettysburg, if you don't mind walking when they close
the roads.

Thanks
Andy

Jim:

If this gets too political, or "on the soap box", please let me know.

For me: it starts at home. I have a two-year old daughter who LOVES going to
Gettysburg. Her favorite thing is "climbing those big rocks" and the 140th NY
monument on LRT. To her: one of her favorite things to do on a nice day is
spending a day in Gettysburg climbing the rocks in Devil's Den, walking over to
LRT and climbing the "Tall Tower" as she calls that monument, then having a nice
picnic on the field.

One thing she has never been allowed to do and never will be allowed to do is
climb on a monument (OK, except those that have been built with the intention of
climbing them, like the 140th NY and the PA Monument) or climb on a cannon. She
has wanted to, as has all kids, but she has been told not to, and as odd as it
might seem, I try to explain to her why she is not allowed to climb on a
monument or cannon. She now says that "that is a monument" and doesn't try to
climb on them MOST of the time.

But she is learning that monuments and cannon have a special meaning above and
beyond. Of course: she asks me why the other kids are allowed to climb all
over the cannon and monuments and she isn't.

Granted: I think at age 2, she is still a little too young to start explaining
the signifance of the battlefield itself, but we are trying to instill in her
that the monuments, cannons, etc have a special meaning that prevents her from
climbing on them. As she gets older (at least until she is a teenager and WANTS
to be around me), I am going to try to instill in her the signifance of what has
occured at Gettysburg and why it has a special meaning.

Another thing we try to do with her (again, this might sound a little odd to do
with a two year old), is expose her to as much as possible. At least once a
month (usually twice a month), we try to go someplace that has had a historical
significance in our country. Some of them are smaller than others, some of them
are fun for her, but some are not. But at least we are trying to get her
exposed at a young age so hopefully as she gets older, it can be a part of her
life to be pround of her heritage.

For instance: we took her last weekend to a place that restores old trolleys
and then runs those trolleys on a 1.5 mile line. She gets the fun of riding the
trolley, but also exposed to something that she won't see anywhere else.

Now I know this would be a long term solution to the problem, but I think if
more people took an approach at home to instill some respect for their heritage
and history, we wouldn't see as much encroachment on our national shrines.

I could be wrong about all of this, and my daughter, when she grows up built a
water park on LRT, but I think it at least gives a better chance than not
trying.

The problem to me with the NPS, Gettysburg Foundation, GMPA as far as education
is: they are only good IF people WANT to know about the battle, so you HAVE to
go to them for the information, if that makes sense? I think they are great for
information if you want the information. The NPS and all those other entities
could have the most inclusive set of documentation and most informative and
easily accessible forum, but if someone doesn't want that information, it does
no good. That is why I think the process needs to start at home to make the
child want to love their history.

Like I said: I know it is a "soap-box" answer to your question. But that is
how I am at least trying to make a difference in my home. I might fail, but I
am going to at least try.

Thanks
Andy

Jay, and Andy,

Ok if education is the answer, how do we help the facilitation of education
process?

There are several groups who come to mind right off the bat.
NPS
Gettysburg Foundation (And Friends)
GMPA

There are at least 3 websites that I know about or more.

My thinking, understanding, whatever is there is no sense of urgency about
this.. Look I also understand that we are all time strapped. We all have
lives. But I wonder if there is a way to bring this all together, so its
concentrated.

One more thing. Gettysburg is just ONE of the historical sites that is
facing incredible pressure. As noted below, I live in New Jersey. Outside of
3 major area of historical impact there is only spots of historical sites
left. Where I live in NJ I am in the MIDDLE of our First Revolution. The
War for Independence. I can in a 20 minute walk from my house, to at least 4
sites that have been either obliterated or are marked by only a story board
or two.

My fear is that Gettysburg along with several of the other sites will become
just like here in NJ. And if we don't make a concentrated effort to save
Gettysburg, all we are going to have is the wonderful park surrounded by
McMansions, Water Parks and Casinos.
And that scares the h*ll out of me, to the point I am almost sick.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Jim:

I am wondering though: who / what is going to support a 7,000 seat concert hall
in Gettysburg? That is the one that struck me as odd. A 7,000 seat hall seems
overkill to me. You have Hershey (Giant arena and Hershey Stadium) an hour to
the north, Baltimore an hour to the east, DC an hour to the south. What event
is going to fill that concert hall with the other major venues an hour away?

The other thing I wonder though: during the peak season, I see the waterpark
being viable, but after the peak season (June and July), would many people
really flock to the waterpark? There doesn't seem to be enough of a population
in the area once the visitation drops to support it throughout the downtime. I
know the restraurants in town have that problem if they don't plan well for the
off-season.

Would an out of the way water park, in an economically troubled area be viable
once the tourists drop off after July is over?

I know that except for a few weekends, once mid-August hits, you notice a
significant downturn on visitation to the park. I love going in Feb - May time
frame and Sept - Dec (with exception of some weekends), as I usually have the
park to myself. Who would be going to that waterpark?

Thanks
Andy

Terry,

I doubt this very much. Out of the two million visitors to Gettysburg each
year, how many would even think twice about the waterpark's proximity to the
GNMP?

I had to look Cunningham Road on a map and I was surprised how close it is
to the park. It appears to be about 2.5 miles from where Confederate Avenue
crosses the Emmitsburg Road.

Bob,

It was just a very hopeful thought.

To play devil's advocate (and I do not support this notion) -It might cause
those coming through on their way to the water park to pause at GNMP and
learn something. I wonder if anyone has looked at how many visitors who
come to the area for just to visit Boyds Bears also stop at the park.

My bad, to borrow an apology from my niece. Maybe it should be more
generic- Yank vs Rebs bumper cars. I can still see little kiddies sliding
down the Genl. Buford water slide from the cupola! ;)

I understand the concern here, however, I just wish that everyone would
get together and help fight to preserve a part of Camp Letterman, the
first general hospital during the Civil War. This is truly hallowed
ground, undeveloped for the most part - no Giant didn't get it all there
is still about 80 acres left! The area of the water park has been
developed before - from Boyd's Bears to the Eisenhower Inn, Frontier
Town and many other things. Look at the area of Gateway Gettysburg - it
was ok for two mammoth hotels and 8 movie theaters - but across the
street a casino was not ok. Go figure on that. Look at the area of
Route 30 off Rout 15 on the way into Gettysburg. It may not be a theme
park but it sure looks like a theme of shopping with much more to come
from a Target to a "new town" to a mega housing development.

With 2 million visitors a year, I don't think it ever is going to stop
until people stop coming to visit the battlefield. People see 2 million

Jim:

You are very correct. I was just responding to your statement "I am
trying, TRYING to understand the thought process about this.."

Unfortunately: I think as long as the dollar makes the world go around
and you have 2 million people a year visiting Gettysburg, these battles
are going to continue. It is unfortunate that it comes down to that,
but don't think it will change anytime soon.

Thanks
Andy

One can only hope that this announcement was made to gage the public's
response to a water/theme park and if the response is not favorable, it
will
just go away?

Hello,

The recently published and unbelievably masterful book on the
Confederate Augusta Powder Works goes into some detail on the quality of
the powder from there (considered the best in the CSA and ranking with
anything then produce in the world at the time) and that there was
cannon powder and musket powder and the two were a bit different.? This
two mile long complex produced 90 per cent of the powder used by the CSA
once it was up and running.

There was a TV documentary last year (History Detectives I think - or
something named similar) that talked about the cannon shells used at
Gettysburg by the ANV and it stated that the shells came mostly from the
Charleston Arsenal due to something at the Richmond Arsenal preventing
their manufacture (a fire I believe) and that the fuses from Charleston
were defective.? This had nothing to to with the quality of the powder
however, for the powder was shipped from Augusta (which also had an
arsenal that fed shells to the Army of Tennessee) to the other arsenals
and the shells assembled there.

Jim,

I think you are right when you say "Maybe the answer is well education
???". I don't think the average person who visits Gettysburg truly has
an
idea of the extent of sacrifice that took place on the ground they walk
on
when visiting Gettysburg. I was guilty of this myself. However, the
more I
studied the battle and its aftermath the more I understood that
Gettysburg
wasn't just about monuments and ghost tours, but it's about the
hardships
and sacrifices that both armies had to endure along with the people of
Gettysburg and ultimately the survival of the United States. I some
times
wonder if people actually consider the ground they are walking on as
hallowed or just a really cool place to visit?

Of course there is the capitalism part that motivates people also!
However,
if people like the ones that post on this message board can educate the
masses about Gettysburg and rally support against such things as water
parks
and Casinos, then maybe we can help preserver the hallowed ground that
is
Gettysburg.

Jay

Thanks Andy..

I see you are between Reading and Harrisburg.

That means you are about 90 miles from GB...

Do you get down there often?

Jay, and Andy,

Ok if education is the answer, how do we help the facilitation of
education
process?

There are several groups who come to mind right off the bat.
NPS
Gettysburg Foundation (And Friends)
GMPA

There are at least 3 websites that I know about or more.

My thinking, understanding, whatever is there is no sense of urgency
about
this.. Look I also understand that we are all time strapped. We all have
lives. But I wonder if there is a way to bring this all together, so its
concentrated.

One more thing. Gettysburg is just ONE of the historical sites that is
facing incredible pressure. As noted below, I live in New Jersey.
Outside of
3 major area of historical impact there is only spots of historical
sites
left. Where I live in NJ I am in the MIDDLE of our First Revolution.
The
War for Independence. I can in a 20 minute walk from my house, to at
least 4
sites that have been either obliterated or are marked by only a story
board
or two.

My fear is that Gettysburg along with several of the other sites will
become
just like here in NJ. And if we don't make a concentrated effort to save
Gettysburg, all we are going to have is the wonderful park surrounded by
McMansions, Water Parks and Casinos.
And that scares the h*ll out of me, to the point I am almost sick.

I look forward to your thoughts.

However,
if people like the ones that post on this message board can educate the
masses about Gettysburg and rally support against such things as water
parks
and Casinos, then maybe we can help preserver the hallowed ground that
is
Gettysburg.

Jay

Andy,

I agree that's it probably the ANSWER to it. But..

How can we ignore, or THEY in this case the developers ignore the fact
that
its hallowed ground.. Man this isn't a FUN area.. It's an area of
Remembrance, of sacrifice, of loyalty, of courage, of honor, of
dedication
to duty, God and Country.........

Maybe the answer is well education ???

That's an over simplification I realize. But I don't have any other
answers
then that..

With 2 million visitors a year, I don't think it ever is going to stop
until
people stop coming to visit the battlefield. People see 2 million
visitors
and instantly see $$$$$.

Thanks
Andy

Dear Tom,

Ok a deep breath here.. I realize I am "preaching to the choir" but man
when, where or if ever is this going to stop?

I don't understand this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am trying, TRYING to understand the thought process about this..

Look I know the area needs jobs. Ok that's a given... But where does the
encroachment on this historic place, this hallowed ground stop?

This is getting really scary. Especially after being down there three
weeks
ago and walking the Herr Ridge road and Longstreets Countermarch.

McMansions popping up like d*mn mushrooms!!

Sighhhhhhhhh

Ok deep breath again. Would some one PLEASE help me out understanding
this
???

The front page of today's Harrrisburg newspaper has an article on
proposed
200-acre indoor water park that would be larger than Hersheypark.

Gun powder is a little too generic so I will use the term Black Powder.
Black powder is basically the same as it was 2,000+ years ago. The
quality of gunpowder depends on the milling process and packaging
process. The size of the particles and how well they are mixed as well
as purity of the ingredients can affect the quality.

Packaging is also important because you literally had to keep your
powder dry. John Gibbon's artillery manual is available on line through
the US Regulars website. There is some information there about how
moisture affects black powder.

Keeping it simple
